JUNIOR PRIZE GIVING
On the 22nd December, the Alderney Sailing Club held its Junior prize giving night. About 45 children and their parents attending the prize giving.
The evening opened with the sailing secretary, Peter Palmer welcoming everybody and briefly giving details of next year's dinghy sailing, which included the news that the club is purchasing four new Laser Picos. This is a major investment by the club and due to the enthusiasm and commitment by the junior members.

Thanks were also given to all the people who helped with last year's dinghy sailing, but more help is always welcome. The cups and prizes were then presented by Sally Barber, the Vice Commodore and book tokens given to all the junior members who turned up on Sunday mornings to sail.
The evening then continued with a meal cooked by Jane Palmer. The meal was sausage, mash and a pudding.
The evening was a great success and hopefully the club will continue to attract more children, but the club needs more support from parents in any way possible to promote the junior sailing.

Prize winners were:

Ben Savage Channel Glass Trophy
Harvey Possnicker Bertie Bloomer Award
Michele Rizzuto Junior Plate
Abby and Emma Bohan Tony Brown Memorial Plate

DINGHY SAILING NEWS
Due to increased interest in dinghy sailing by young sailors, the Alderney sailing club has ordered six 'Pico' Laser Dinghies which will arrive in the middle of April. The club is purchasing four, the Le Riche Centenary fund have sponsored one, and we are looking for another sponsor or two for the sixth 'Pico'.  Having looked carefully at various types, the 'Pico' seemed to fit all the clubs' needs.

The 'Pico' is 3.50m in length, 1.43m beam, can be used with a jib and one single or 2 crew. It has a unique reefing system which can be done afloat simply by feeding the sail around the mast; no knots to tie, plenty of cockpit space in the self draining cockpit, so ideal for the average adult or two young sailors.

The strong hull made of Tecrothene 121 is a new generation thermo plastic, which gives immense stiffness, exceptional impact strength, built in buoyancy and resistant to scratching, also easy to repair. The centreboard has a shock absorber in the front to protect the hull and centreboard should you run aground!

The 'Pico' hull comes with launching trolleys and repair kits for basic maintenance. There have been many occasions, especially during the August sailing courses, when we have been short of dinghies, so with the 6 new 'Picos', 4 existing Mirrors and backed up by the 3 420's, we are in an excellent position for plenty of sailing this season.

I will be contacting all the sailors from last years dinghy courses, as I am sure you are all keen for a repeat performance. Bill Clark and Harvey Possnicker will be here again, this time for 3 weeks. Bill will be completing his senior instructors rating this Easter and is looking forward to meeting you all again. A grand launching will be held when the 'Picos' arrive, so you can all see them. Hurry up Spring, so we can get on the water.
